YORK – THROUGH THE BOTTOM OF A COCKTAIL GLASS!

Day 19/28 February

H A P P Y   M O N D A Y !

Today’s blog is just a bit of overview of what I got up to last weekend with La Boyfriend! As Valentines day fell mid-week, my better half a I decided to do our little V-day celebration the weekend before in York! It was our F I R S T  Valentines Day! I’ve never really celebrated it, so nothing flash just a low-key, one night away, just him and me!

The day start with a sing-a-long car ride to The Greatest Showman! I mean who isn’t digging this soundtrack right now? Am I right? am right! I’ve only just found out that Odeon Cinema are hosting sing-a-long viewing of TGS!

HOW CRAZY AMAZING IS THAT!!

Ooops… bit off subject!

Anyhow, we arrived in York, parked up, checked in and started to make our way in to the city centre. It was a bit of a murky day, overcast and little showers of rain here and there but we didn’t let it dampen our mood! (See the pun there!!) Our first port of call was to get some food to fuel our engines for the day. We stopped by the Slug and Lettuce for a bite to eat followed by a cocktail to wash it down!

I decided to have Chicken, Cheese, Bacon & BBQ Ciabatta and Stu picked the Southern Fried Chicken Wrap, both came with a serving of Skinny Fries. They where both served on a small rectangle plate with the Fries in a small tin bucket. I hate to admit it… but Stu in my opinion made the better choice! Does that happen for anyone else? The food arrives and everyone else’s looks better than your own? York is one of them city that I feel no guilt in having a drink anytime of the day, sooooo I had a Woo Woo with my brunch. A Woo Woo for those who do not know is a cocktail that is made up of Vodka, Peach Schnapps & Cranberry Juice!

If you haven’t guessed by the name of the blog & the fact I had a cocktail with my brunch… this blog is going to include a few cocktail mentions!

After we where fed and watered, we wondered round York popping our heads in and out of shops. York is a bit of a odd bod, its a mixture of old buildings owned by high street shops such as Urban Outfitters, Zara and Lush cosmetic. Thrown in between are one off little shops such as The Yorkshire Soap Co and The Imaginarium and The Shop That Must Not Be Named. One of my favourite shops to visit is Jack Wills. Yes I like the clothing but that not all, I’m a bit of a creative weirdo and appreciate all sorts of weird and wonderful things, the architecture in Jack Wills is something I just L O V E! I don’t know if its the quirky lay out, the crazy amount of stairs or that every time I walk in I could just imagine what I’d do with each room if it was my house! I just L O V E it!

As I’ve just mention York is home to a few ‘One of a kind’ shops, The Yorkshire Soap Co and The Imaginarium are to of which that captured my love from the moment I stepped through their door. They are just filled with quirkiness, there something I just love about experiencing something that feels one of a kind! The Imaginarium has a carousel horse in the window, a mini piano in the centre of the shop and tables cut in half displayed as shelves on the wall! Take a look…

Can we just take a minute to appreciate how cute those animal pot wall mounts are? not only do they look super C U T E but I could totally imagine them with fake flower flowing out! Something to add to my memory bank for my future home possibly?

I have a sneaky feeling that both The Imaginarium and The Yorkshire Soap co are owned by the same person, as they both have the unusual cut in half tables that doubled up as shelves on display!

The Yorkshire Soap Co, sell a mixture of bath bombs, salts, candles and other bubbly bath time fun products! The shop is a sparking white, very spacious and opened planned (I hate cramped shops, put me off shopping! its a Fin thing!) and has a bit of a circus theme!

Cute right?

Lets get back to C O C K T A I L S!

If you’ve been to York before and you are  fan of cocktails, it would be a insult to not have been to The Evil Eye! It is a super quirky, colourful, brightly painted bar and beer garden, themed of Brazil, Haiti and Morocco! Stu had never been before and I was more than happy to be the first to introduce him to this life changing moment!

& this is what we indulged in…

It was our Valentines weekend after all!

Contains: Tanqueray Gin, Crème de cassis, Pomegranate, Blueberries & Lemon!

I actually think I have this cocktail every time I go to The Evil Eye! Not a bad tradition if I don’t mind saying so myself as it is D E L I C I O U S!

Stuart had Hello Sailor, quite honestly I’m slightly guttered to say I wasn’t in ear shot when he ordered that cocktail! It contained Redleg spiced rum, Chambord, Pomegranate, Raspberries & Lemon! It seemed to go down rather swimmingly!

Why we where sat all comfortable, we decided it would be rude to not have another round! wouldn’t it ?

Big Blue: Amaretto, Blue Curacao & White Rum! (Stu shot this before I got a snap! Men eh!?)

Apple Pie: Teichenne Apple, Schnapps, Zubrowka Vodka & Spiced Apple Puree! It was actually CRAZY-AMAZING! 100% tasted like a apple pie!!

C O C K T A I L S

(Left) Evil Eye Cooler: Jack Daniels, Amaretto, Pineapple & Cranberry!

(Right) Murder In A Hurricane: Rum, Blueberry Syrup, Cranberry, Blueberries, Lime & Sugar Syrup!

By the time the second round was finished I would be lying if I didn’t saw I was feeling the effects of the alcohol.. quite a bit! Oops

O N W A R D S!!

Next stop, The Botanist! It is a chain link bar selling a selection of quirky botanical cocktails, craft beers and ales! Stu and myself have been to the one in Newcastle, quite honestly putting the cocktails to one side, the building its self is breath taking. what really sold it to us was the live music, there is just something about live music that makes me soooooo happy! Lucky for us, the one in York was just as magical! Now.. the cocktails..

Basically there is a section on the menu called Pots & Planters, there is a few cocktails to choose from and they all come in either a tea pot of flower pot! A bloggers dream right?

We tried..

Raspberry Disaronno Sour: Raspberry puree, lemon juice, pomegranate juice, Disaronno & raspberry liqueur!

Pear & Kiwi Cup: Kiwi, lime, apple juice, Licor 43, pear cognac, green apply liqueur and a splash of green tea!

& finally..

Peach & Apple Pot: Ketel One vodka, apple juice, lemon, fresh rosemary & peach syrup!

Did I mention that they use liquid nitrogen with the flower pot planter cocktail? makes a cracking boomerang!

So there you have it, a few of my favourite cocktail consumed while spending my day in York with the other half! I realised while writing this I didn’t actually consuming ONE, not ONE Cosmopolitan! How bizarre! A Cosmo is my favourite all time cocktail, Carrie Bradshaw would be ashamed! (if you don’t watch Sex and the City you might not understand that!)

I got to try some super funky cocktails so can not say I am not happy!

Hope you enjoy this blog, it was a bit random! But what’s life if not a little random? A little insight to York? A few fabulous cocktails? what not to love?

Till next time (Hopefully a not as random blog),
Lots of love, your gal…
